Secondary School All educational paths leading to employment in the auto manufacturing industry begin with a high school foundation. The selection of subjects from Grade 9 to Grade 12 determines post-secondary educational options and career choices. Students considering a career in the sector are advised to select courses in mathematics, science, and technological education at a level of difficulty matching admission requirements to post-secondary institutions of their choice, apprenticeships or the workplace. Cooperative education and other forms of experiential learning are recommended. School-work transition programs and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) provide opportunities to explore occupations while still earning high school credits. For a list of all departments of education across Canada refer to the provincial Ministry of Education websites, click here. Specialist High Skills Major The Specialist High Skills Major allows students to focus on a career path that matches their individual skills and interests. Each major is a bundle of 6 to 12 courses in a selected field, such as hospitality and tourism, or construction. Students who choose a major learn on the job with employers and at skills training centres, as well as in school. They can earn valuable industry certifications, including first aid and computer technology qualifications. Students who complete a major can be confident that they leave high school prepared with the knowledge, skills, and industry-recognized qualifications desired by employers, and postsecondary education and training institutions. |
